Europa League Last 16 Draw, Full Fixtures, Dates & Winner Odds

The draw for the UEFA Europa League round of 16 took place on Friday, February 21, in Nyon, Switzerland, with all remaining teams now aware of their pathway to the final.

Much like the Champions League, this season’s Europa League underwent a revamp, with UEFA replacing the old group stage with an expanded league phase featuring 36 teams.

The top eight teams from the league phase qualified directly to the round of 16, while those finishing between ninth and 24th entered the knockout play-off round, where eight more teams advanced to complete the last 16 lineup.

Friday’s draw paired Manchester United with Real Sociedad in the last 16, while fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur were drawn against Dutch club AZ Alkmaar.

Elsewhere, Ajax will take on Eintracht Frankfurt, Bodo/Glimt face Olympiacos, and Viktoria Plzen go up against Lazio.

Meanwhile, other last-16 ties see Fenerbahce meeting Rangers, AS Roma locking horns with Athletic Bilbao, and FCSB squaring off against Lyon.

The Europa League last 16 first legs will be played on  March 6, with the second legs on March 13.

With the round of 16 now set, we take a closer look at the latest winner odds and assess the favourites to lift the 2024/25 Europa League trophy.

24/25 Europa League Favourites to Win the Trophy

Tottenham Hotspur @ 5.00

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou famously declared that he always wins trophies in his second season at a club, yet since making that bold statement—especially brave for a Spurs manager—his team have crashed out of both domestic cup competitions and are certainly not winning the Premier League, where they are currently 12th.

That leaves the Europa League as his only shot at backing up his bullish claim and, whether inspired by the Aussie’s confidence or simply by their record of five wins and two draws in the league phase, most top betting sites, including BetKing, have Spurs as favourites to win the competition.

They face a tricky last-16 tie against AZ Alkmaar, and if they get past the Dutch side, they’ll have to navigate a quarterfinal clash with either Frankfurt or Ajax, making their route to the Europa League final anything but straightforward.

That said, Spurs have thrived in this season’s Europa League, and with this not only being their last hope of silverware but also possibly their only route back into European football next season, they’ll approach the knockouts with plenty of motivation.

Manchester United @ 7.00

The Red Devils are joint-second favourites to win the 24/25 Europa League on BetKing, and while their Premier League form has been abysmal— just two wins in their last ten matches—the bookies seem happy to overlook that, focusing instead on their third-place finish in the league phase and their unbeaten Europa League run.

United won five and drew three of their eight league-phase matches to qualify directly for the last 16, where they face a daunting tie against Real Sociedad.

Their record against Spanish opposition in Europe is grim, with six straight seasons of being knocked out by a La Liga side—Sevilla in 2018, Barcelona in 2019, Sevilla again in 2020, Villarreal in 2021, Atlético Madrid in 2022, and Sevilla once more in 2023—so while Real Sociedad are struggling domestically, history is far from being on United’s side.

Winning the Europa League is their only realistic path to Champions League football next season, so expect boss Ruben Amorim to throw everything at it.

But this United side have rarely risen to any occasion this season, so it is hard to see them stepping up to the level required to go all the way.

Lazio @ 7.00

Lazio won six of their eight league phase games (D1, L1) to top the table on goal difference. That solid showing has bookmakers backing them to be serious challengers to win the 24/25 Europa League.

As joint-second highest scorers with the second-best defence, they’ve got plenty in their favour.

And with a last-16 tie against Viktoria Plzen followed by a potential quarterfinal clash against either Bodo/Glimt or Olympiacos—both of whom they’d fancy their chances against—their path to the latter stages looks promising.

Athletic Bilbao @ 7.00

Athletic Bilbao will have more motivation than most of the remaining teams in the competition, with the final fixed for their San Mamés home ground. However, a tough last-16 clash against AS Roma means a quarterfinal berth is far from guaranteed.

That said, they finished second in the league phase on goal difference after winning six of their eight matches (D1, L1), showing they have what it takes to mount a serious challenge.

Best of the Rest

The last four Europa League winners prove that winning this competition doesn’t always come down to the betting favourites or the more fancied sides unless it’s an Unai Emery team, in which case they’re practically guaranteed to win.

So, it wouldn’t be a surprise if one of Real Sociedad, AS Roma, 21/22 winners Eintracht Frankfurt, Lyon, Ajax, Fenerbahçe—now managed by two-time tournament winner José Mourinho—or even Olympiacos, who have the best defensive record in the competition, end up celebrating with the trophy come May.
