LaLiga Strengthens Match-Fixing Efforts with U.S. Integrity Partnership

LaLiga has announced a groundbreaking partnership with U.S. Integrity (USI), a leading integrity and compliance monitoring company. This collaboration aims to bolster the integrity of Spain’s top-tier football divisions, LaLiga EA Sports and LaLiga Hypermotion, by implementing a real-time alert system and other critical services to detect and investigate match-fixing and suspicious sports betting activities.

In this strategic alliance, USI will equip LaLiga with its integrity monitoring alerts and analytical insights, alongside access to ProhiBet, a prohibited betting solution developed through a collaboration between USI and Odds On Compliance. These tools are designed to enhance the oversight of betting activities around LaLiga events and to swiftly identify any potential integrity threats.

Holt believes that such international partnerships will amplify the sports betting integrity industry and strengthen USI’s unique and proprietary anomaly detection tools.

This strategic partnership underscores LaLiga and USI’s shared commitment to preserving the integrity of sports and combatting any attempts at manipulation or corruption. By leveraging USI’s expertise and state-of-the-art monitoring technologies, LaLiga aims to detect and address any suspicious activities swiftly and effectively, ensuring that its competitions remain fair and transparent.

Sportradar Report Highlights AI’s Role In Combating Suspicious Betting Activity

In a related development, Sportradar, a global leader in sports integrity solutions, recently released its 2023 Integrity Report, shedding light on the prevalence of suspicious activities across various sports worldwide.

According to the report, Sportradar monitored nearly 850,000 events across 70 sports in 2023, with 1,329 suspicious events identified across 11 sports.

Despite the increase in the number of detections, the actual rate of suspected manipulation remained relatively stable, thanks in part to Sportradar’s enhanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, including the enhancements to its Universal Fraud Detection System (UFDS). The report also revealed that AI was crucial in identifying and flagging 73% of all suspicious matches in 2023. This marks a substantial increase from the previous year and underscores the effectiveness of integrating AI into the fight against match-fixing.

In addition to uncovering match-fixing, Sportradar’s integrity work also contributed to 147 sporting and criminal sanctions across 10 sports and 23 countries. Notably, a single case resulted in the conviction of 10 snooker players for match-fixing and other charges.

Notably, despite a reduction in 44 suspicious match detections in Brazil in 2023, it still had the most of all countries with 109 across the year. However, there was a 29% decrease in suspicious sporting events between 2022 and 2023. This is the first time since 2020 that detections have declined in the country.

Furthermore, the report highlighted that 40% of all suspicious matches occurred in the 10 countries most affected by match-fixing, indicating a clustering of activity. Football accounted for 71.5% of those events, while basketball represented 17.5%.
